Establishment and management of modern nurseries

The success of any pod depends on the availability of the right planting material. The quantity and quality of the final crop depends on the initial planting material itself. If any mistake is made in the initial years, it cannot be rectified in later years and this will cause permanent loss of productivity and income of the fruit owners. The biggest problem in not achieving the required productivity in fruits is non-availability of real seeds and right planting material. Planting material should be taken continuously from scientifically grown high-yielding maternal plants which are free from pests and diseases.

Nursery drawbacks

Shoots are picked from disease-prone and infected trees (such as mangoes, citrus fruits and deformities in temperate plants).

They are usually taken from new plants.

They are also selected from mother plants, whose history is not known.

There is not enough rotation in the nursery and only one bed is used year after year.

Plants generally multiply in beds. Therefore, each time 4-6 kg of soil is transported in the form of earth ball. It is difficult, expensive and less effective to move plants with soil.

Along with this, many pests (root rot, stem rot, wilt, nematode) often come.

Production of fewer plants per unit area.

In most cases there is no provision of source for rootstock.
